Too many have been taking the wrong slant on our doing good, and what it gets us. You hear it stressed that doing good won't save you, and too many people take that as it's doing you no good to be good before you're saved. Not so, of course. The world is blessed for any and all the good you do, and God sees it all, before and after salvation, but too many think it means that doing good before being saved is a waste.
No, and a thousand times no. It's just that it's not good deeds that get you Born Again. You can't point to your past, however great it may have been to the public eye. It's just that those things won't put your name in the Book of Life. You must give your heart to the Lord, and mean it. To me, the best example in our Bible is Romans 10:9..."That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved."
After you're saved, of course it's to your credit, and the Lord makes a list, which He'll use on Judgment Day to see how we've handled our Christianity. I hope I'm clearing things up a bit, because I heard one of our top ministers tell on TV, how those things will be used to dole out crowns and other rewards, large and small. And he said we'll wear those rewards publicly, to receive honor and glory, according to how well we've done.
I simply can't believe that, and I don't see it in the Bible. Surely it would lead to envy, jealousy, and pride. And that's the kind of problems that got the most beautiful angel, Lucifer, put out of Heaven. And by the way, good looks won't count either. But that's another story!
Do Good always, but obey God to prepare you for Heaven.
