I’ve talked at some other time, about the
words of Jesus to that person who asked him, "What should I do to inherit eternal life." (Mark 10:21 and Luke 18:22).
But it bears repeating. Mark says one came running, and that he had great possessions,
while Luke says a certain ruler who was very rich, but the stories agree.
At any rate, Jesus named four of the Ten Commandments, adultery,
killing, stealing and lying. The man may have been a bit proud as he said he had kept all those from his youth. But Jesus
then told him, "One thing thou lackest….sell what you have and distribute to the poor and you’ll have treasure
in Heaven. And come and follow me."
Notice Jesus didn’t say give all his treasure, but it cut the young ruler to the quick. And it didn’t
help when Jesus said, "and come and follow me." And so the one thing the man lacked was to put Christ first in
his life. That’s the spoiler for many "good" people who let that one sin keep them outside of Heaven’s
It stands out like
a dirty spot on the front of a wedding dress, as a bride walks down the aisle. Or as I said in another Conquest article once;
like a spill in the middle of a new gym floor; that’s all you see, and it spoils the show.
And it puts the fact that one sin can keep you out
of Heaven (James 2:10) in perspective. Remember that Moses disobeyed God in one thing, and it kept him from entering the
Promised Land he had led the Israelites to, on a 40 year hike. God had told him to speak to the rock to get water for the
people, but Moses, in his anger with that disobedient crowd, struck the rock twice. The water came out, but the damage to
Moses was done.

trying…like Mom who a kid figures must have eyes in the back of her head! If she hears a noise in the kitchen and
hears the lid of the cookie jar lifting, she knows the rest. And when a rich man wants "just one more dollar,"
Christ knows that. It just figures. So straighten up. It’ll be worth it.
